How the Québec tipped minimum wage actually works
Québec is the only Canadian province that still sets a lower minimum wage for tipped employees. If you work in a place where tipping is customary and you regularly receive tips, your employer may pay you $13.30 an hour instead of $16.60.
The important part is the top-up rule: tips belong entirely to you, and your employer is still responsible for making sure your total earnings reach at least the general minimum wage. If a shift is slow enough that tips do not close the gap, the employer has to cover the difference.
You are not a tipped employee if you work somewhere without table service — a fast-food counter or a cafeteria, for example. In those roles the general minimum of $16.60 applies regardless of whether a tip jar exists.
